DOK Alignment Tool for Elementary School

Elementary teachers often design assessments that over-rely on recall, naming shapes, defining vocabulary, or restating facts. The DOK Alignment Tool gives a sheet for sorting every K-5 assessment item by Webb's Depth of Knowledge level 1-4 and counting the balance across the full test, with an example of how to raise a question toward Level 2 and Level 3 tasks appropriate for young learners. From sorting activities to simple inference questions, build assessments that go beyond recall.

How teachers use this for elementary school

Grade 2 math check-in audit

Paste a Grade 2 addition and subtraction check-in to discover whether tasks require recall, skill application, or reasoning, then elevate low-DOK items to age-appropriate Level 2 tasks.

Kindergarten literacy assessment

Classify phonics and comprehension tasks by DOK level. Many K-1 assessments lean heavily on DOK 1, and the sheet helps you find items that can be raised to Level 2 without increasing content difficulty.

Grade 3 science unit review

Evaluate a science unit test for cognitive demand. A strong Grade 3 science test should include observation tasks (DOK 2) and simple reasoning items (DOK 3) alongside recall.

Grade 4 social studies quiz

Audit social studies quiz items to confirm students are being asked to apply map skills and make inferences, not just identify capitals or name state symbols.

Grade 5 reading comprehension

Check that reading comprehension questions include inference, evidence-based reasoning, and author purpose analysis at DOK 2 and 3, not just literal recall.

End-of-unit portfolio prompts

Evaluate writing and project prompts by DOK level to ensure students are explaining their thinking, not just listing facts, critical for standards-based grading.

Questions teachers ask

Is DOK analysis useful for K-2 assessments?

Absolutely. Even young learners can engage with DOK 2 tasks (sorting, comparing, applying a pattern) and simple DOK 3 tasks like explaining why or predicting what comes next. The sheet's descriptors do not change by age, so you adapt them to what is developmentally meaningful for K-2, not the same expectations as high school.

What does DOK 3 look like in a Grade 1 assessment?

A DOK 3 task for Grade 1 might ask a student to explain why a character felt sad using two details from the story, or to predict what would happen if the story continued. The cognitive demand is strategic thinking and evidence use, applied to content well within a first grader's reach.

Most of my items come back as DOK 1, is that a problem?

It depends on the assessment purpose. A beginning-of-year baseline check may legitimately be mostly DOK 1 to establish what students recall. A mid-unit or end-of-unit assessment should aim for a balance of DOK 1-3. The sheet has no targets by assessment type or grade band beyond its one in four check, so judge whether your balance matches your purpose.

Can I use this to audit a full K-5 unit rather than a single test?

Yes. Paste all assessment items from across a multi-week unit to see the cognitive demand distribution across the whole unit. This is especially useful for curriculum directors reviewing K-5 assessment rigor consistently across a grade level or school.

How does the tool handle picture-based or oral assessment items?

You can describe the picture or oral item in text form ('students are shown a picture of a food chain and asked to identify the producer') and the AI classifies the cognitive demand of the task as described. The format does not affect the DOK level; the cognitive demand does.
